Alpina began in the early 1960s with the introduction of their Weber dual-carburetor tuning kit for the BMW 1500. The tuning kit raised the 1500's power output to nearly even with the newly introduced BMW 1800. After conducting their own tests of the tuning kit, BMW was so impressed that they gave Alpina their official endorsement, and declared that customers who purchased Alpina products would be covered under BMW's factory warranty.

From the late 1960s and through the 1970s, Alpina helped BMW raise its profile in motorsports. Alpina went on to win the European Touring Car Championship multiple times, and employed legendary drivers like Hans Stuck, Derek Bell, Jacky Ickx, James Hunt, and Niki Lauda.

In 1983, Alpina shed its tuner status when it was declared a full-fledged automobile manufacturer by the West German government. Alpina cars have unique features not found on standard BMWs, such as the Alpina Blue Metallic and Alpina Green Metallic paint colors. The engines are assembled by hand and generate more power and especially torque. The interiors are bespoke, offering a very high level of craftsmanship and a wide variety of materials to choose from. And naturally, all Alpina cars feature iconic 20-spoke alloy wheels.
