Ford Motor Company’s development of the new GT LM race and GT road cars began in secrecy in 2013 with collaboration from Canada’s Multimatic Motorsports. This program is notable for the race car having been introduced and campaigned well before the road car went on sale to the public.

The 4-car racing program is managed by Chip Ganassi Racing of IMSA, NASCAR, and IndyCar fame, with two cars based in the United States for competition in the International Motor Sports Association, and two cars based at Multimatic’s facility in the United Kingdom for competition in the World Endurance Championship.

The GT LM’s chassis and suspension consist of a carbon composite tub with steel and aluminum subframes, double A-arms at each corner with torsion bars, adjustable dampers, adjustable anti-roll bars, and Brembo brakes. Ford’s all-aluminum 3.5-liter V6 engine is assembled by Roush Yates Engines and features dual overhead camshafts with 4 valves per cylinder, direct fuel injection, twin turbochargers, and is estimated to produce over 500 horsepower. Power is routed to the rear wheels through a paddle-shifted sequential 6-speed transaxle.

All the GT LMs in the program came together in June of 2016 to contest the 24 Hours of Le Mans in the GTE Pro class wearing the numbers 66, 67, 68 and 69 to commemorate the Ford GT40’s four consecutive overall wins at Le Mans from 1966 to 1969. The #68 Ford GT LM piloted by Frenchman and Le Mans-native Sébastien Bourdais, American Joey Hand, and German Dirk Müller won the race, completing 340 laps and covering a distance of 2879 miles at an average speed of 119.9 miles per hour. This achievement came fifty years to the day since the GT40’s first Le Mans victory in 1966. The race rekindled Ford and Ferrari’s old rivalry with the GT LMs engaged in a fierce battle with Risi Competizione’s Ferrari 488 GTE which finished in second place. The remaining GT LMs finished third, fourth, and ninth.
