The 914 began in 1970 and continued through 1976 with nearly 119,000 units produced.

The 914 is a light-weight 2-seater weighing just over 2,000 pounds. The 914 features a rear mid-ship design where the engine is mounted behind the passenger compartment and ahead of the rear wheels. This arrangement allowed for two cavernous trunks - one in the front and one in the rear - unusual in a small sports car. A semi-convertible with a targa top, the 914's roof panel is removable and can be stowed in the rear trunk.

The 914's general layout, coupled with a fully independent suspension, gave it very good handling. But its overall performance suffered because it was low on power.

The 914 was maligned early on by negative reviews in the automotive press, but its reputation changed for the better mid-way through its production run with various engineering improvements and the introduction of the stronger air-cooled 2.0-liter flat-four engine with 100 horsepower. The 914 is fondly remembered today and is highly sought-after by collectors.
